Warehouses in Avonmouth excited for Bristol arena plan

Warehouses in Avonmouth, such as Central Park Bristol, are excited to see support gathering for the new Bristol arena plan. Bristol Mayor George Ferguson needs the support of the main political parties in Bristol but also help from neighbouring authorities as he looks to plug a funding shortfall for the proposed 12,000 seater arena.

And today, the leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council has hinted they see the development of an arena in the neighbouring city as a positive move. The official Twitter account of Councillor Neil Butters, has tweeted: “It (Bristol arena plan) should be good for the region when finances sorted.”

Last week Mr Ferguson laid out a plan to have the long-awaited arena opened by 2017. The mayor has drawn up a business plan for the £90million project which will see Bristol finally get the acts that currently bypass the city to play venues in Cardiff or Birmingham. But he needs the backing of the city council to approve the package for the arena, which would be built on a parcel of empty land behind Temple Meads station and create 400 jobs.

It would also bring an estimated £150 million into the local economy. The sticking point is a £27million shortfall, and Bristol City Council will have to agree on committing between £8million and £15million when it sets its budget next February.
