Warehouses in Bristol will benefit from proposed Seabank 3 energy plant at Avonmouth

SSE has announced plans for Seabank 3, an extension to the Seabank gas fired power station in Severnside near Bristol in South Gloucestershire. The current power station uses combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) and has a total capacity of 1,145MW. The plans for Seabank 3 would add two further CCGTs with an estimated combined capacity of 1,400MW with the capacity to generate over 2,500MW.

Seabank Power Station is operated by Seabank Power Ltd (SPL) of which SSE is a 50% stakeholder. The gas-fired power station is currently made up of Seabank 1 and Seabank 2.

The proposed Seabank 3 CCGT site is located approximately 5km to the north east of Avonmouth on the outskirts of Bristol, 10km north west of the city centre. It is located entirely within South Gloucestershire Council but sits on the Bristol City Council administrative boundary immediately to the south. The development would be located on approximately 50 acres of land adjacent to the existing power station in an area known as Crooks Marsh, a flat open area of land intersected by drainage ditches and overhead electricity transmission lines. Around half of this area would be required for the power plant and the remainder would be sufficient to accommodate any future carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant that may be required. The site forms part of the ‘Severnside’ area identified in the local development plan for sustainable employment and other complementary uses.
